Screening Day

Help them Grow Up Healthy

The free Screening Days with the McKean County Family Centers are helpful to families in several ways. First Screening Days help to identify problems early. This is important because:

  • An estimated 5-8% of children under the age of 5 have some sort of developmental disability or chronic condition.
  • 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with autism.
  • Recent studies estimate that only 21% of all preschool children are screened for vision problems and only 14% receive a comprehensive vision exam.
  • Every day, 33 infants are born with some degree of hearing loss.
Another reason Screening Days are helpful is because the earlier a problem is discovered, the earlier the child can receive help. Finally, Screening Days help families get connected with other resources that are available to them. A parent who had been involved with the Family Centers for several years, explains how getting connected affected her and her family:

"A referral was made through the Family Center to the Wrap-Around Services at the Guidance Center for my twin sons that have Autism Spectrum Disorder. I was unfamiliar with this program and the services they provided. Our Family Center staff explained the program and helped me through the process in order to receive these services. The impact of Wrap-Around for my family has been phenomenal."

Working Together

Screening Days are an excellent example of how The Family Centers are working towards getting families the best services they need by providing free health and developmental screenings for children ages birth to five. Not only do the screenings assist in assessing children, they also link families to other organizations which are represented at the screening days including:
