Success Stories
Story 4
*Tina and Rob didn’t think that going to the McKean County Strengthening
Families (SFP for short) would help them all that much. After all, they already
had a pretty strong family.
Brenda, their oldest of three, had just started 5th grade. She was usually
respectful, was a good student and had not given her parents much trouble
growing up and they didn’t see any signs that she would in the future.
Another family, who they were friends with, had gone through the program the
year before and couldn’t stop saying enough good things about it. They decided
to sign up when Brenda came home from school one day after hearing a
presentation about SFP and asked her parents if they could go as a family.
The family ended up attending each of the seven sessions and graduating. Rob
and Tina especially appreciated hearing how other parents dealt with different
situations. They also discovered the topics on finding the balance between
setting limits and showing love very helpful. Brenda liked the fun and
interactive ways she learned about dealing with stress and peer pressure.
Now, a few years after they went through the program, Rob and Tina are pleased
they participated in SFP. They occasionally hear from other parents what
their family is going through during the teen years. They can see how what
they talked about in the program has helped them avoid many of the same
problems.
The Strengthening Families Program helped them to communicate openly about
things like drugs and alcohol. Also, It helped Brenda see how drugs and
alcohol can get in the way of reaching her goals.
While they don’t know for sure what things would have been like if they hadn’t
participated in SFP, they are glad they did all they could to help prevent the
problems they could have faced during the teen years.
